About

Who built NERD, why it exists, and why the advisor is a cartoon.

I'm Justin. I built NERD.

Why this exists

I kept watching the same thing happen. Small businesses knew AI mattered, bought a subscription to something, pasted a few prompts in, got confident-sounding nonsense back, and quietly decided AI wasn't for them.

The tools weren't the problem. The missing piece was context. A model that knows nothing about your business can only give you advice that would fit any business — which is another way of saying advice that fits none of them.

So NERD starts from the opposite end: learn the business first, then advise.

The long game

NERD is one instance of a bigger thesis I'm working through: that a business can increasingly run itself, and that the interesting work is building the machinery that makes that true.

An AI business factory. Not "AI helps you work faster" — software that carries the parts of a business that used to require a person to hold them in their head. NERD is where I test that in public, on real businesses, with real consequences when it's wrong.

Using NERD to build NERD

NERD is built with NERD. Its own roadmap, its own use case scoring, its own tool decisions run through the playbooks you're reading about.

That's not a cute marketing line — it's the fastest feedback loop I've found. When a playbook produces something useless, I'm the first person it wastes.

Why small businesses

Enterprise AI work is well funded and slow. Small business AI work is underserved and fast — one good decision visibly changes someone's month.

That's the fun part. You can watch it land.

Why a cartoon nerd

Because a cartoon can tell you the truth.

The nerd is a version of me that gets to be a smart-ass and get away with it. When advice is uncomfortable — this idea isn't worth building, this tool you already paid for is the wrong one, this task shouldn't be automated at all — it's easier to hear from a character than from a consultant with an invoice attached.

The humor is doing real work. It buys the honesty.

Background

I've spent my career close to the intersection of software and the operators who have to live with it. Enough engineering to build the thing, enough time in businesses to know which parts of the advice actually survive contact with a Tuesday.

Everything I know goes into the playbooks. Where it doesn't fit into a playbook, that's what the AI + Human Specialist tier is for — you get me directly.
